Ethical Issues in Music Therapy Research

3. Abstract

This presentation will focus on the need for ethics in all scientific research, including music therapy research.  The following areas of research ethics will be discussed: 
(a) informed consent, 
(b) confidentiality, 
(c) potential risks involved for subjects, 
(d) research designs, 
(e) deception, 
(f) vulnerable population, 
(g) boundary issues, and 
(h) researcher competence.  

The entire discussion will be geared specifically to music therapy research.

5. Presenter’s Bio

Joke Bradt, PhD, MT-BC, is Assistant Professor of Music Therapy at Montclair State University (USA).  She received her master degree in music therapy and her Ph.D. from Temple University (USA).   Since 1997, Dr. Bradt has been focusing her work on research in medical music therapy, specifically as it relates to music entrainment for pain management. She has presented her research on this music therapy intervention at several national and international conferences.
